1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how Hangul Sori (한글소리) ("we", "our", or "the App"), developed by Sujin Arin DataWorld (Frankfurt am Main, Germany), collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our mobile application.

By using Hangul Sori, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

2. Data We Collect

2.1 Stored Locally on Your Device (Always)

The following data is stored only on your device using Android SharedPreferences and never leaves your phone unless you explicitly enable Cloud Sync:

Learning progress (vocabulary cards seen, "got it / didn't get it" counts)
Game scores (Hangul Wordle, Initial Consonant Quiz)
Learning streak (consecutive days using the app)
Spaced Repetition System (SRS) state per vocabulary item
App preferences (UI language, TTS speed)
Selected CEFR level (A1 – B2)

2.2 Anonymous Authentication (Automatic)

On first launch, Hangul Sori creates an anonymous Firebase user ID to enable optional cloud features. This ID is a random string, not linked to personal information, and used only as a backend identifier. Stored by Google Firebase (Frankfurt, EU servers).

2.3 Optional: Cloud Sync via Google Sign-In

If you choose to enable Cloud Backup in Settings, we collect:

Your Google account email address
Your Google display name
A link between your anonymous ID and your Google account

This is used solely to restore your learning progress when you switch devices. We do not use this data for marketing, profiling, or sharing with third parties.

2.4 Camera & Photo Library (v2.0 — "책 한 컷 / Snap-and-Learn")

If you use the optional Snap-and-Learn feature to photograph a Korean textbook page, the following applies:

🔒 The photo never leaves your device. Text recognition (OCR) runs entirely on-device using Google ML Kit; the image bytes are never uploaded to our servers.
📝 Only the extracted Korean text (and your manual corrections to it) is sent to our Cloud Function for word/grammar analysis.
🇩🇪 The extracted text is forwarded to DeepL (EU servers, Cologne, Germany) to produce German/English translations. DeepL states it does not store input from API requests.
💾 The extracted text and analysis results are saved only on your device (your "Bookshelf") unless you have Cloud Backup enabled.

You can revoke camera and photo permissions at any time in your phone's Settings; Snap-and-Learn will simply be unavailable.

2.5 Optional: Usage Statistics & Crash Reports (Opt-in)

Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics are disabled by default. They are only activated if you explicitly opt in on the welcome screen (two separate, voluntary checkboxes) or later in Settings → Privacy. You can withdraw this consent at any time in Settings → Privacy; collection stops immediately.

📊 Usage statistics (Analytics): anonymous app events (e.g. screen views, session length) tied to a random Firebase Installation ID — used only to understand which features are used.
🐛 Crash reports (Crashlytics): device model, OS version, and stack traces when the app crashes — used only to fix bugs.

2.6 Optional: Study Groups ("Gye") & Push Notifications

If you create or join a study group (Gye), we store in Firestore (EU servers): your chosen group nickname, the group name, your weekly learning contributions, sent stickers/cheers, and any reports you submit. This is required to run the group feature and is deleted when you leave the group or delete your account. Joining a Gye requires a minimum age of 16 (Art. 8 GDPR).

For group notifications (e.g. weekly goal achieved) we use Firebase Cloud Messaging: a push registration token (a device identifier) is stored in your user document. Notifications only work if you grant the system notification permission; you can revoke it anytime in your phone's Settings.

2.7 Korean Audio (Text-to-Speech)

High-quality Korean pronunciation uses Google Cloud Text-to-Speech. Pre-generated audio for built-in content is simply downloaded. For words you add yourself (Snap-and-Learn, custom wordbooks), only the Korean text is sent to our Cloud Function (EU, Frankfurt) to synthesize audio; no other personal data is attached. Synthesized audio is cached on your device.

2.8 What We Do NOT Collect

5. Children's Privacy

Hangul Sori is rated for ages 13 and up. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 (US) / 16 (EU). The Google Sign-In feature requires an age-eligible Google account, and study groups (Gye) require a minimum age of 16.

Usage statistics (Analytics) and crash reports (Crashlytics) are off by default for everyone and only run after explicit opt-in consent; they can be turned off again at any time in Settings → Privacy. The app contains no advertising. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately to have it removed.

All data transmission to Firebase uses TLS 1.3 encryption
Firestore data is encrypted at rest (Google-managed encryption)
Local data is stored in app-private storage
We do not store passwords — Google handles all authentication

7. International Data Transfers

Firebase services are hosted in Frankfurt, Germany (europe-west3) by default for EU users. For users outside the EU, data may be processed in Google's global infrastructure under Standard Contractual Clauses (SCC).

2. Erhobene Daten

2.1 Lokal auf Ihrem Gerät (immer)

Folgende Daten werden ausschließlich auf Ihrem Gerät gespeichert und verlassen Ihr Telefon nicht, es sei denn, Sie aktivieren ausdrücklich Cloud Sync:

2.2 Anonyme Authentifizierung (automatisch)

Beim ersten Start erstellt Hangul Sori eine anonyme Firebase-User-ID. Diese ID ist eine zufällige Zeichenkette, nicht mit persönlichen Informationen verknüpft, und dient ausschließlich als Backend-Identifikator. Wird von Google Firebase gespeichert (Frankfurt, EU-Server).

2.3 Optional: Cloud Sync via Google-Anmeldung

Wenn Sie Cloud-Backup in den Einstellungen aktivieren, erheben wir:

2.4 Kamera & Fotomediathek (v2.0 — "책 한 컷 / Snap-and-Learn")

Wenn Sie die optionale Snap-and-Learn-Funktion nutzen, um eine koreanische Lehrbuchseite zu fotografieren, gilt Folgendes:

🔒 Das Foto verlässt Ihr Gerät nicht. Die Texterkennung (OCR) läuft vollständig auf dem Gerät mithilfe von Google ML Kit; das Bild wird niemals auf unsere Server hochgeladen.
📝 Nur der erkannte koreanische Text (und Ihre manuellen Korrekturen) wird an unsere Cloud Function für die Wort- und Grammatikanalyse gesendet.
🇩🇪 Der extrahierte Text wird an DeepL (EU-Server, Köln, Deutschland) weitergeleitet, um deutsche/englische Übersetzungen zu erstellen. DeepL gibt an, Eingaben aus API-Anfragen nicht zu speichern.
💾 Der extrahierte Text und die Analyseergebnisse werden nur auf Ihrem Gerät (Ihr "Bücherregal") gespeichert, es sei denn, Sie haben Cloud-Backup aktiviert.

Sie können Kamera- und Fotoberechtigungen jederzeit in den Telefon-Einstellungen widerrufen; Snap-and-Learn ist dann einfach nicht mehr verfügbar.

2.5 Optional: Nutzungsstatistiken & Absturzberichte (Opt-in)

Firebase Analytics und Firebase Crashlytics sind standardmäßig deaktiviert. Sie werden nur aktiviert, wenn Sie auf dem Willkommensbildschirm ausdrücklich zustimmen (zwei separate, freiwillige Checkboxen) — oder später unter Einstellungen → Datenschutz. Sie können die Einwilligung dort jederzeit widerrufen (Art. 7 Abs. 3 DSGVO); die Erhebung stoppt sofort.

📊 Nutzungsstatistiken (Analytics): anonyme App-Ereignisse (z. B. Bildschirmaufrufe, Sitzungsdauer), verknüpft mit einer zufälligen Firebase-Installations-ID — nur um zu verstehen, welche Funktionen genutzt werden.
🐛 Absturzberichte (Crashlytics): Gerätemodell, OS-Version und Stack-Traces bei App-Abstürzen — nur zur Fehlerbehebung.

2.6 Optional: Lerngruppen („Gye") & Push-Benachrichtigungen

Wenn Sie eine Lerngruppe (Gye) erstellen oder ihr beitreten, speichern wir in Firestore (EU-Server): Ihren gewählten Gruppen-Spitznamen, den Gruppennamen, Ihre wöchentlichen Lernbeiträge, gesendete Sticker/Anfeuerungen sowie von Ihnen abgegebene Meldungen. Dies ist für den Betrieb der Gruppenfunktion erforderlich und wird gelöscht, wenn Sie die Gruppe verlassen oder Ihr Konto löschen. Für Lerngruppen gilt ein Mindestalter von 16 Jahren (Art. 8 DSGVO).

Für Gruppen-Benachrichtigungen (z. B. Wochenziel erreicht) nutzen wir Firebase Cloud Messaging: ein Push-Registrierungstoken (eine Gerätekennung) wird in Ihrem Nutzerdokument gespeichert. Benachrichtigungen funktionieren nur, wenn Sie die System-Benachrichtigungsberechtigung erteilen; diese können Sie jederzeit in den Telefon-Einstellungen widerrufen.

2.7 Koreanische Audio-Ausgabe (Text-to-Speech)

Die hochwertige koreanische Aussprache nutzt Google Cloud Text-to-Speech. Vorgenerierte Audiodateien für eingebaute Inhalte werden lediglich heruntergeladen. Für selbst hinzugefügte Wörter (Snap-and-Learn, eigene Wortschätze) wird nur der koreanische Text an unsere Cloud Function (EU, Frankfurt) zur Audio-Synthese gesendet; es werden keine weiteren personenbezogenen Daten angehängt. Synthetisierte Audiodateien werden auf Ihrem Gerät zwischengespeichert.

2.8 Was wir NICHT erheben
